Things to Do in San Luis Obispo

The Best of California’s Central Coast

Residents of the Central Coast can attest to its natural beauty and pleasant weather year-round, but there’s also a long list of activities that guests can do during their stay. We’ve collected our favorite San Luis Obispo outdoor activities to ensure that you get the most out of stay at La Cuesta Inn. There’s never a dull moment in San Luis Obispo.

Hiking

There is an abundance of hiking trails crisscrossing the Central Coast’s stunning landscape. Hiking is one of the best things to do in San Luis Obispo, and you’ll often meet locals out on the trails. Some of our favorite spots are Montaña de Oro State Park, Morro Bay, Bishop’s Peak, Felsman Loop, Cerro Alto, and Los Padres National Forest, all offering trails for hikers of all skill levels.

Bicycling

Experience world-class mountain biking in San Luis Obispo County. Trails are easily access from Downtown, Highway 101, and Montaña de Oro State Park. There are also several road ride loops with spectacular scenery, including the Bob Jones Bikeway that ends in the beach town of Avila.

Rock Climbing

Less than a half-hour’s drive from La Cuesta Inn climbers can find terrific climbing areas. Our favorite is Cabrillo Peaks, which offers great open views on a sunny day. Our staff will be happy to coordinate rock-climbing excursions during your stay.

Fishing & Sailing

The nearby town of Morro Bay is known for excellent fishing and sailing. Anglers can charter a boat for a day on the water, while those looking to sail can find a boat at the Morro Bay Yacht Club.

Kayaking

Several companies rent kayaks within the area, or you can arrange a guided tour to take you to more secluded areas for kayaking. Our top pick is the Morro Bay Estuary for a close-up look at the serene wildlife.

Surfing

Smaller waves in Morro Bay make it an excellent destination for novice surfers. Spend a day hanging ten and relaxing on the soft sand at the sand spit at Montaña de Oro State Park.

Birding

The Audubon Society lists San Luis Obispo County as one of the top ten birding sites in the country. For the best birding head to Morro Bay Estuary which is a major stopping point in bird migration. You’ll see over 200 species of native and migrating birds, including peregrine falcons, who nest and hunt from the cliffs of Morro Rock.

Monarch Butterflies

Each winter millions of migrating Monarch butterflies stop in Pismo Beach and the Central Coast. Head to the Pismo Monarch Grove to see eucalyptus trees covered by these beautiful butterflies.

Marine Life

The waters of the Central Coast are home to elephant seals, sea otters, gray whales, and much more. View the elephant seals at the northern edge of Morro Bay, California’s largest mainland rookery. You can also embark on whale watching tours to catch a glimpse of the ocean’s largest mammals.

Off-Roading

Nearby Oceano Dunes is the only California State Park where vehicles can be driven along the beach. This unique, off-road area is located on a beautiful 5 ½ miles stretch of the California coastline. ATVs and Dune Buggies can be easily rented in the nearby area. Make sure to bring your sense of adventure!
